Lambeth Karate Tournament.

RSA Retains Trophy!

Once again Renshinkai Southern Academy, (RSA, in conjunction with BIKO) hosted the 4th Lambeth Karate Open Tournament on Sunday 19th October 2003, at the Brixton Recreation Centre. This year the event had 200 competitors who competed in 30 different categories. Although the event started late, the general view was that the tournament was a success. It was good to see quite a few spectators at the event and the standard of the competitors continue to improve each year.

A special congratulation must go out to all the competitors and coaches for their efforts in supporting the event. Also a big thank you to all the referees who were at hand to ensure that the tournament ran smoothly.

There are areas that can be improved, to take the tournament to the next level. It was noted that there was a lack of quality referees. This in turn created ill feelings with some coaches.

RSA is committed to developing tournaments that are fair to all who take part. The competing clubs came from Lambeth, Croydon, Ealing, Midlands, Southampton, Hampshire, Watford, Middlesex, Essex, Chiswick, Cambridge, Surrey, Kent, and Ipswich. The aim of the Tournament is to continually develop the skills of both children and adults form the grassroots level and giving them the opportunity to display their skills to a large audience.

Present at this year’s event was the World Karate Champion Leon Walters and Commonwealth Champion Natalie Williams. In the afternoon, they both presented trophies to the finalist of certain categories. There was a demonstration by Dave Heart 5th Dan Iaido, who displayed traditional swordsmanship.

The RSA / LKOT Shield went to RSA for accumulating the most points (223), followed by KenBuKan (79) and third Higashi (73). RSA was able to amass a huge total by entering a large contingent of competitors. Clubs were given 10 points for 1st place, 7 points for 2nd place, 5 points for 3rd place and 1 point for entering the tournament.

Lambeth Council, Sport 4 Lambeth, and BIKO have contributed to the success of the Tournament, by supporting this event. The next RSA event will be the Lambeth Junior Karate Interclub Tournament, which will be held early 2004 at the Brixton Recreation Centre.
