EU Okinawan Open Karate and Kobudo Tournament Ryukyukan

Master Nohara Hanshi came over from Okinawa along two of his Black Belt fighters Mamoru Toda and Hirokazu Eda. A training seminar for Okinawan Karate and Kobudo was held the day before the competition.  This was well attended by BIKO Members who have a good relationship with Master Nohara.

Three Members of BIKO India came to take part in the training and competition. They were the Chief Instructor of BIKO India, Ganesh Saha, his son Sandip Saha, and Mondal Subrata.

In the competition the BIKO entrants did well in both kata and kumite. In the weapons kata event Sai section, Sandip Saha came second with a good performance of Ni-Cho-Sai kata. Whilst Toby Winder came second in the open Kobudo kata with his Nunchau kata.

In the Kumite the BIKO fighters had some of the most spectacular fights. In the
Touch – contact points fighting, Mondal Subrata (BIKO India), gained second place in the men’s 1st Kyu and above category. Ganesh Saha was supposed to fight in that category, but was required to spend the day judging kata and Kumite events.

In the knock-down Kumite section, men’s middle-weight category, BIKO fighter Alex Swainson came joint third; the category was won by Hirokazu Eda of Ryukyukan, Okinawa. In the men’s heavy-weight category, BIKO fighter Toby Winder came joint third after being eliminated on points, by the BIKO knock-down Champion Warren De Reuck who won the event. Second place went to Kakha Tatelishvili, a Wado-Ryu fighter from Plymouth.

Everybody enjoyed the competition, BIKO Executive Member Gerry Coulter was one of the referees and judges for both kata and kumite events. The continued good relationship BIKO has with Ryukyukan is expected to continue into the future.
