1st BIKO Championships
: 14 September 2003
The British Institute of Karate Organisation (BIKO) hosted the British Open Karate Championships Sunday 14th September 2003, at the Grundy Park Leisure Centre, Herts. The event was a total success with 400 competitors competing for prestigious trophies. They travelled with their supporters from all over England and Wales to make a great atmosphere at the Championships.
The event had four matted areas, which the Chief Referee, Dale Gamble ensured that they were in constant use all day. All the competitors and coaches must be congratulated for their efforts in attending the event and it had been noted that the standard of the competitors were very high.
Many people were surprised with the punctuality of the event, which started at 9.30am with the kata sections. A demonstration was given at the end of the kata sections of traditional Nunchuku and Bunkai by Gerry Coulter 5th Dan Wado and Sam Winder 3rd Dan Kobudo.
When this was completed we then proceeded to the kumite sections. The standard of the fighters were very high and the spectators were thrilled to see many spectacular techniques. Leon Walters world heavyweight champion was at hand to distribute trophies to the winners and sign autographs.
In the afternoon the championships had a bit of light relief, the sport centre’s fire alarm went off and the hall had to be evacuated. It was good that we were blessed with an extremely warm day to pass the hour outside of the centre. This incident slowed the smooth running of the occasion and some team events were cancelled.
The organisers would like to thank all the referees, table officials, medics, coaches, competitors and spectators for their support for the event and hope to see them again at the next BIKO competition.
