British Open Championships Sunday 11th September 2005 The British Institute of Karate Organisation (BIKO) in association with Ruykyu Kan of Okinawa, hosted the British Open Karate Championships held on Sunday 11th September 2005, at the Grundy Park Leisure Centre, Cheshunt, Herts. Due to other karate events occurring on the same day, there was a noticeable reduction in competitor compared to last year. However this did not deter the spirit of the competitors that attended. This year the event had an international attendance. Three new categories were included in the tournament which were run by Ruykyu Kan. There was a knock down section for men up to 70 kg, men over 70 kg and kobudo weapons kata open to both male and female. People came form various parts of the world like, Okinawa, France, Egypt, South Africa, India, USA, Venezuela and Japan to make this tournament special. Mr Graham McCann from Glasgow played the bagpipes that led the Scottish competitors followed by the international contingent into the hall. All those who attended from outside the UK were presented with BIKO certificates of participation by the chairman Ken Henville. Master Koei Nohara Hanshi 8th Dan from Okinawa, who is the President of Okinawan Karate-do Shorinryu Ryukyukan Karate Kobudo Federation and also the Okinawan Full contact Karate Association was in attendance. He refereed the knock down and the kobudo sections followed by awarding trophies and certificates from Okinowa to the winners. Later on during the event, he performed a nunchaku kata and then gave a breath taking display of kicking by breaking a baseball bat with his shin. The crowd were thrilled by his speed and power. A DVD is available featuring all the action at this exciting prestigious event. To order this, please contact the secretary. Once again the organisers thank all the referees, table officials, medics, coaches, competitors and spectators for their continued support for its events and hope to see them again at future BIKO competitions.
