OPEN KARATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

The British Institute of Karate Organisation (BIKO) hosted its second
major championships, the United Kingdom Open Karate Championships
held on Sunday 7th March 2004, at the Thornbury Leisure Centre, South
Gloucestershire. The event was again a total success with 400 competitors
competing for prestigious trophies on the day. They travelled with
their supporters from all over England, Wales and Scotland to make
a fantastic atmosphere at the Championships. We also saw a few old
faces from the competition circuit coming out of retirement for this
event.
The event had four matted areas, which BIKO’s Chief Referee;
Dale Gamble ensured were running smoothly during day. All the competitors,
coaches and spectators must be congratulated for their efforts in
attending the event and it had been noted that the standard of the
competitors were high.
The event started at 9.45am with the kata sections. A demonstration
was given at the end of the kata sections of traditional Sai Kata
with Bunkai by Sam Winder 3rd Dan Kobudo, you can now purchase BIKO
DVDs of Traditional Weapons Kata. When this was completed we then
proceeded to the kumite sections. The standard of the fighters were
very high and the spectators were treated to many impressive techniques.
The organisers would again like to thank all the referees, table officials,
medics, coaches, competitors and spectators for their continued support
for this event and hope to see them again at the next BIKO competition.
