The British Institute of Karate Organisation (BIKO) hosted the British Open Karate Championships Sunday 1st October 2006, at the Grundy Park Leisure Centre, Herts. The event was a total success with over 350 competitors competing for prestigious trophies. They travelled with their supporters from all over England, Scotland and Wales to make a great atmosphere at the Championships. Also BIKO instructor Ganesh Chandra Saha travelled from West Bangal with his student for them to fight at this event. The event had four matted areas, which the Chief Referee, Dale Gamble ensured that they were in constant use all day. All the competitors and coaches must be congratulated for their efforts in attending the event and it had been noted that the standard of the competitors continues to be high. The event started at 9.30am with the kata sections, then on to the kumite sections. A demonstration was given before the kumite was on, of traditional Iaido by Dave Hart 5th Dan Iaido and his son Junior Hart 1st Dan, and Sam Winder 4th Dan Kobudo. The standard of the fighters were very high and the spectators were thrilled to with spectacular techniques. There were many English and International Champions like Natalie Williams and Alton Brown to name just two. Also in attendance was sensei Peter Spantan with his Higashi fighters. The organisers would like to thank all the referees, table officials, medics, coaches, competitors and spectators for their support for the event and hope to see them again at the next BIKO competition.
